The Aetherians were a human civilization of extraordinary magical capability. “Aetherian” is an exonym assigned by later societies; their actual name for themselves was lost in the same cataclysm that destroyed their civilization and created the Arcane Wilds.
The Aetherians harnessed raw magical forces to construct cities reportedly illuminated by iridescent light, and crafted artifacts and spells of considerable complexity. Their knowledge of the arcane was, by all surviving accounts, unrivaled among mortal civilizations.
The Aetherian civilization was destroyed by a cataclysm of undetermined nature, possibly a consequence of their own magical experimentation. The aftermath produced the Aetherium Veil, a barrier of raw magic that now separates the Arcane Wilds from the rest of Rolara. No Aetherians are known to have survived, and their civilization exists only through the ruins and magical anomalies they left behind.
