The Antediluvians are the last surviving individuals from the Age of Wonders, the era before the Stars of Power were sealed. Each is of extraordinary age and possesses firsthand knowledge of a world now lost to history, including arcane arts, languages, and traditions that no living scholar can reconstruct from texts alone.

The Antediluvians lived under the light of the Stars of Power, celestial bodies that once governed the flow of magic across Rolara. They witnessed the Extinguishment, the catastrophic event in which the Stars were sealed, plunging the world into a prolonged age without high magic. As a result, they carry memories of both the heights of arcane civilization and its collapse.

With the recent reignition of the Stars of Power, the Antediluvians occupy an unusual position: they are the only living beings with direct experience of the magical conditions now returning to Rolara. Whether they serve as mentors, cautionary examples, or both remains an open question. Their knowledge is invaluable but deeply shaped by the trauma of the Extinguishment and the centuries of isolation that followed.

Major language groups and dialects

Old Tathar is similar enough to Oldcommon that Antediluvians who spend at least a year studying Old Tathar can become conversationally fluent by the end of the first two months, and sound like a native by the end of that year.

Average technological level

Antediluvians have all mastered reading, writing, and basic calculations for minor arcane formulas.

Historical figures

The following individuals are known or self-proclaimed Antediluvians. Each predates the Extinguishment and has survived into the present era through various means.

Sorcha Zall’ag

Sorcha Zall’ag is the Queen of Vampires and ruler of Slagborough, a Domain of Dread. She is not the first vampire, but her origins in the Age of Wonders make her among the oldest. Her continued existence in Slagborough is marked by isolation, and she is widely feared.

Icaghor

Icaghor, once the Lugal of Tatharia, was born in the far northern parts of the Ancient World and united the Tathar tribes, establishing laws, customs, and traditions that endured for millennia. His contributions to education and governance were substantial. However, his legacy is complicated by his actions during the cataclysmic floods: he fled to Aikibira and stole barrels of liquid from the Fountains of Youth, an act that preserved his life but tainted his reputation for a millennium.

Clyde

Clyde was once an adventurer alongside Icaghor but chose a different path during the cataclysmic floods. He retreated to the island of Aikibira, where he founded a settlement for outcasts and criminals. Thanks to the Fountains of Youth on Aikibira, he appears no older than 50 despite his extraordinary age. He remains isolated, haunted by the unknown fate of his former companions and reportedly burdened by a secret discovered during his long seclusion.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Antediluvians saw nude bodies as the highest form of art. Those very few who can remember the Magus Aetas (the Age of Wonders) can likely remember the beautiful gowns and masks worn at balls that revealed just enough skin to be considered modest while still seeming beautiful.
