The Spirit of Time is one of the three fundamental forces that sustain Rolara’s existence, alongside the Spirit of Nature and the Spirit of the Cosmos. Together these three compose the Threefold Truth, the cosmological framework describing the primal energies that underpin reality. The Spirit of Time is not a being or entity but an abstract principle: the arcane force that governs temporal flow, the sequence of cause and effect, and the structure of causality itself. It is the force that wizards and sorcerers draw upon when casting spells that manipulate time, and the principle that makes temporal magic possible.
Where the Time article describes how time behaves across Rolara’s planes (variable flow rates, planar effects, the rules of time travel), the Spirit of Time describes why time behaves at all. It is the underlying current that ensures the past remains fixed, the present is experienced, and the future remains unrealized until it arrives. It maintains the order of events and prevents paradoxes at a level more fundamental than the Chronomaster’s administrative oversight.
The Spirit of Time finds its most direct institutional expression in the office of the Chronomaster, the divine authority responsible for enforcing temporal law. The Chronomaster does not create or sustain the Spirit of Time but serves as its guardian, ensuring that the principle operates without disruption. In this sense, the relationship between the Spirit and the office is analogous to the relationship between a natural law and the authority tasked with its enforcement.
