Holding III, Medicine.

Built Year 84. Authorisation and operating orders filed with this entry. Never enlarged.

The main installation in the medical wing. It projects a directed field worked from the same principle as the radiant ray, turned to mending instead of harm. It is our own design and nothing like it exists among the peoples we trade with.

What it does

A short session leaves a patient rested as though they had slept the night through, and clears paralysis, poison, and disease. It works on the condition itself, not on how the condition feels.

A long session additionally clears blindness and deafness. Long exposure has restored function in cases the attending physicians had already written down as permanent.

Limits

Two patients at once. Attempts to run three were abandoned. The field will not hold when it is split that far.

One treatment a day, per patient. A full day from the end of one session before the next will do anything. Enforced without exception in three hundred and sixteen years.

Four attempts to shorten that are on record, all early, all in emergencies. All four did nothing at all: the field ran, the patient lay in it, nothing happened. It does not harm the apparatus and it does not harm the patient. It simply is not there to be had twice.

It does not remove the need for rest. It meets the need on the body’s behalf, once. Afterwards the body goes back to needing sleep on the usual schedule.

Running it

It draws hard, continuously, and straight off the core rather than through the general distribution.

Confirm the core is steady before you start a long session. If the supply goes irregular, stop the treatment. Do not run through it.

It cannot be made bigger. The components are specific and the calibration is narrow. Our arcanists concluded that enlarging it would mean building a new one rather than extending this one. That conclusion is filed with the original build authorisation and was never revisited.
