Clavus is a faint star near the south celestial pole of Rolara, the pole star of the southern hemisphere. Its name is Latin, meaning both a nail and a ship’s tiller.

Like the other stars, Clavus is a light beyond the crystal sphere that bounds Rolaraspace, and its nature has not been established. It lies about a tenth of a degree from the south celestial pole, so its nightly circle around the pole is too small for the eye to see, and it does not shift through the year. It is therefore slightly truer than the North Star, a body inside Rolaraspace that drifts a little against the stars over the course of a year. Clavus is the dimmer of the two.

Clavus is visible only from Rolara’s southern hemisphere. From Tatharia it never sets; from the north, including the Mythic Land of the Jiao, it is never seen.
