The Moon was once the only natural satellite to cross Rolara’s night skies since time immemorial. From the ground, the surface of the Moon was visible on clear nights, especially from higher elevations. Keen-eyed astronomers could see massive canyons and wide plains of white. The surface is dotted with impact craters.

Like the moon of Earth, this moon is tidally locked, meaning there is a side that is never viewable from Rolara’s surface. Since the Extinguishment of the Stars of Power, two additional bodies have become visible in the skies: the crystal sphere of the Moonwilde, and more recently, the Binary Planet. As of 409 TC, Rolara has three celestial bodies visible in its night sky.

The sight of the Moonwilde’s crystal sphere crossing the heavens led the superstitious mortals of Rolara to war long ago. As their magic waned and the heavens changed, they could only assume the world was ending. Many cultures have risen and fallen again in the intervening centuries, and each called the moons by different names.

One common thread is that many cultures use a word for the larger, natural Moon that can be traced back to ancient sources where the word means simply “moon.” The words used for the Moonwilde often trace back to words meaning “crystal, trickery, or mirror.” The Binary Planet, newly arrived in the sky as of 409 TC, has no established name in common use yet; scholars and astronomers are still determining what to call it.

Both the Moon and the Moonwilde’s crystal sphere can be observed from Rolara, including their far sides. The Binary Planet cannot: it is tidally locked with Rolara, and its far side has never been visible from the surface.

Localized Phenomena

Gravity and Atmosphere

The gravity of the Moon is similar to Rolara’s in that it pulls from all directions towards the center of mass, but the gravity is not as strong. It also is not weightlessness, as experienced in Wildspace. The Moon’s atmosphere is thin as well.
