The Murkwrought Marauders are a Shadar Kai nation headquartered in Arvanshad, within the Shadowfell, operating under the leadership of Tah’Caluss Yorn as Master of the Marauders. They function simultaneously as a geopolitical faction, a military force, and a religious organization devoted to the Raven Queen. Their membership comprises warriors, assassins, and spellcasters recruited and organized through a structured circle system. The Marauders are regarded as one of the most capable armed forces operating out of the Shadowfell, and their influence extends through both military strength and diplomatic engagement with regional powers.
Structure
Master of the Marauders
The Master of the Marauders holds supreme authority over the faction. The title is self-proclaimed, but a claim must be backed by genuine support from the Marauders as a whole. The title is also known as Master of Darkness.
Advisor Circles
The Cruarchan (First Circle): The innermost circle of advisors, consisting of a small number of trusted lieutenants with specialized expertise. They are responsible for executing the Master’s most critical plans and strategies.
The Gwylltaeth (Second Circle): Skilled tacticians, assassins, and spies responsible for covert missions, intelligence gathering, and maintaining internal order. They also serve as the faction’s religious enforcement arm, monitoring for unauthorized worship and rooting out followers of forbidden faiths, particularly worship of Banoranthae.
The Duladron (Third Circle): Experienced warriors and mages who lead the Marauders in battle and contribute to the faction’s overall military capacity. They hold expertise across a range of combat styles and magical disciplines.
The Cysgodfaol (Fourth Circle): The faction’s emissaries and diplomats, responsible for external relations with royalty and other organizations. They maintain the Marauders’ public-facing political relationships, which Tah’Caluss uses as cover for longer-term objectives.
Culture
The Marauders’ culture is built on four primary values: devotion to the Raven Queen, reverence for shadow as a material and spiritual resource, individualism and personal ambition, and a code of strength and loyalty that governs relationships within the faction. These values are not merely ideological: they shape practical customs, from how laws are recorded to how internal disputes are resolved.
The legal code is documented as tattoos on the bodies of the High Circle of Advisors. Enforcement is the responsibility of the Blackwing Enforcers, who combine combat training with investigative and surveillance functions. Punishments range from the shadowbrand, a magical mark of public stigma, to banishment with permanent notation on the “wall of shame” within Fel Serinodel.
The Marauders actively cultivate a reputation for defiance of conventional power structures. This is partly sincere cultural identity and partly strategic: the faction’s punk-rock posture makes it difficult for outside observers to assess its actual capabilities and goals.
Religion
Worship of the Raven Queen is the official state religion of the Murkwrought Marauders. Tah’Caluss is a devoted follower and expects members to uphold her tenets. Religious hierarchy within the faction overlaps significantly with military hierarchy: prominent members of the Advisor Circles hold positions in the religious structure.
Worship of Banoranthae is explicitly forbidden. Tah’Caluss regards Banoranthae’s emphasis on magical balance between the Prime Material Plane and the Moonwilde as directly contrary to the Raven Queen’s goals and to Marauder values. The Gwylltaeth monitors for Banoranthae worship and other faiths deemed incompatible with Marauder objectives. Other religions are tolerated provided they do not conflict with core Marauder beliefs or challenge Tah’Caluss’s authority.
Assets
The Marauders’ primary stronghold is Arvanshad, a mythical fey city that exists only in the Shadowfell. Within Arvanshad, the ruined castle Fel Serinodel serves as the faction’s central command. The city also contains guild halls, training facilities, and active marketplaces. The Marauders have accumulated significant wealth through conquest and trade, including a substantial collection of magical artifacts and relics.
Their military capacity includes an elite standing force and a fleet of vessels suited to the Shadowfell’s waters, supplemented by magical transportation including teleportation circles and shadow-stepping.
Currency: Gwythraer
The Marauders use a dual currency system. Physical coinage, called Gwythraer, is minted from Duscaebron and other metals, engraved with Marauder and Raven Queen iconography. Denominations run from the Caerfenn (copper equivalent) through the Sidhara (silver), Eilthire (electrum), Gwaelod (gold), and Plaenys (platinum). High-value transactions are also conducted in Essences of Shadow: intangible fragments of Shadowfell energy that can empower magical items, spells, and rituals.
