The Deep Dragon is a species of dragon native to the Deep Dark, dwelling in the labyrinthine tunnels of Charnagolath beneath the surface of Rolara. It is a nightmarish cousin of the chromatic dragons, adapted to a life of perpetual darkness and warped magical energy.
Deep Dragons have smooth, black-and-gray hides suited to their subterranean existence. Their eyes are pale and sightless, relying instead on an inner perception that transcends ordinary sight. As a Deep Dragon ages, its spore breath causes fungi to bloom across its skin, a grotesque display reflecting the warped magical energy of its realm. Its wings, attached to its front legs, fold close to its body, allowing navigation of the narrow tunnels that wind through the Deep Dark.
The species is characterized by its intellect and cunning rather than brute force. Deep Dragons hoard secrets, delighting in hidden knowledge of far-off lands and seeking new insights and tricks to wield against the denizens of the Underdark. They look down on any creature that is not useful to them, yet they are willing to bargain for knowledge they lack.
The Deep Dragon’s breath weapon is an exhalation of magical spores that instill fear and scar the mind, a manifestation of its connection to the dark forces that shape its subterranean world.
