In the epoch known as the Age of Wonders, Mercury Dragons were the epitome of arcane majesty.
Mercury Dragons are a species of metallic dragon native primarily to the southeastern corner of Rolara, in the region of Videha. They are considered the earthly avatars of Vritra, the ancient three-headed Dragon Deity of Videha, and have been both venerated and feared throughout Rolara’s history.
Biology
Mercury Dragons have long, slender bodies with whiplike tails and elongated snouts adorned with short, backward-curving horns. Their wings resemble sheets of polished metal. Their most distinctive feature is their scales, which begin as dull silver at birth and gradually brighten over the dragon’s lifetime, eventually achieving a mirror-like reflective finish capable of dazzling and disorienting observers.
Like most dragons, Mercury Dragons have no upper limit to their longevity, with lifespans extending into several millennia. As they age, their scales become both more reflective and tougher, providing natural armor that few weapons can penetrate. Their eyes, typically luminescent silver, gain depth with age and can appear almost hypnotic.
Mercury Dragons possess innate resistance to fire and poison. Their breath weapon is a radiant beam of energy, a manifestation of inner arcane power. Some elder specimens can manipulate light itself, using their reflective scales to focus and amplify beams of blinding brilliance. Gender differences are subtle, manifesting primarily in horn size and shape and in vocal pitch.
Behavior
Mercury Dragons are notoriously volatile and unpredictable. Their moods shift rapidly, flowing from serene contemplation to frenetic activity within moments. This unpredictability extends to their interactions with other beings, making them equally likely to engage in peaceful dialogue or sudden combat depending on their current disposition.
They are solitary by nature, their erratic temperaments making sustained relationships rare, though they do form temporary alliances when it serves an immediate interest. Highly intelligent but easily distracted, Mercury Dragons are known for rapid speech and abrupt conversational shifts. They are collectors at heart, with eclectic hoards filled with everything from magical artifacts to mundane trinkets that caught their fleeting attention.
History
The Age of Wonders
During the Age of Wonders, Mercury Dragons were revered as the living embodiments of Vritra. Their images were immortalized in grand temples and their tales sung by bards across the lands. It was a time when their scales shone brightest, reflecting the abundant magic that suffused Rolara.
The Great Exodus
Warned by Ketenem, the Bronze Dragon God, of an impending cataclysm, the dragons of Rolara took to the skies and crossed the boundaries of realms. The Stars of Power were extinguished, and with their dimming, the Mercury Dragons vanished, leaving behind only echoes of their glory in the art and scriptures of Videha.
The Resurgence
1,526 years later, the Stars of Power reignited, heralding a new age and the return of arcane energies. Sensing the shift, Mercury Dragons returned to their ancestral lands in Videha. Their return has sparked a resurgence in the worship of Vritra, and their images are once again being carved into the walls of new temples.
