Cleverbeard is one of the eldest of the Sapphire Sentinels, a treant whose form towers even among the other guardians of the Sapphire Weald. His bark glows faintly with the blue luminescence that defines the forest, and his most distinctive feature is the long, twisting roots that coil from his face like a great braided beard, lending him his name. The roots thrum with the song of ancient magic, a tune only the truly attuned can hear.
History
Born from the heartwood of the Mother Tree over a thousand years ago, Cleverbeard has witnessed the ebb and flow of Rolara’s magic with a perspective few share. In his younger days, he was a fierce protector of the Weald, leading his fellow Sentinels in defense against threats both magical and mundane. His methods were swift and his heart unyielding; he believed the Weald’s preservation was paramount and that any who sought its secrets were interlopers to be driven away.
His transformation began when he first encountered Hazelnut, a young Tiefling abandoned in the Weald. At first, he was suspicious of her, as he was with all outsiders. Yet she did not seek to exploit the Weald’s power but instead found solace and companionship among its trees. Her connection to nature, forged in hardship, resonated with Cleverbeard’s own deep bond to the land. Over time, Hazelnut’s curiosity and kindness softened his hardened spirit, and the two formed an unlikely bond.
Through Hazelnut, Cleverbeard learned the importance of balance, not only in preserving the Weald but in understanding the world beyond it. He became less rigid in his thinking, wiser, though no less formidable when the Weald required protection.
Abilities
Cleverbeard’s powers are closely tied to the primal magic of the Weald. He can summon the forest’s arcane energy to bend time and space within its boundaries, confusing and misleading those who would threaten it. His roots are deeply connected to the Ley Lines, allowing him to detect any disturbance or imbalance in the flow of magic. When the Weald is in danger, he can animate nearby trees, transforming them into soldiers to aid in defense. Unlike in his youth, Cleverbeard now seeks to resolve conflict with patience and understanding before resorting to violence.
Personality
Cleverbeard speaks in slow, measured tones, his voice like the groaning of ancient wood shifting in a deep forest. His wisdom is sought by the few druids and sages brave enough to venture into the Weald, and though he remains suspicious of outsiders, he will grant an audience to those who show respect to the land. He considers Hazelnut not just a friend but something of a student, though he would never say so aloud.
His morality is centered on preservation: not merely protection of the Weald’s physical integrity, but maintenance of its arcane balance. He views the Ley Lines as the lifeblood of Rolara and the Weald as a vital organ in the world’s arcane circulatory system. Over the centuries, his philosophy has shifted from isolation toward selective integration, recognizing that the Weald’s survival depends on understanding its relationship to the wider world.
Despite his immense wisdom, Cleverbeard harbors a deep suspicion of those who wield magic irresponsibly, seeing them as potential threats to the Weald’s delicate balance. His openness has limits, and a protective instinct can flare into righteous anger when the Weald is threatened.
Current Status
Cleverbeard currently dwells deeper in the Sapphire Weald than the Crystal Lagoon, further interior than his previous known range. He reunited with Hazelnut during the Girlsquad party’s traversal of the Weald and directed them toward Murkelwood, sharing atmospheric lore about the Azure Bloom along the way.
He has shown a watchful, quietly suspicious disposition toward Evangeline, not hostile, but the wariness of an ancient being who reads the forest’s mood around those who carry certain kinds of want. Evangeline’s quest to restore her original body, driven by the sentient artifact Darkesha’s Black Hat, appears to register with Cleverbeard on a level the party has not yet fully articulated.
