The Azure Bloom is a rare, gigantic pink lotus that blooms unpredictably deep within the Sapphire Weald. Despite its name, the flower is not blue; the “azure” designation is a longstanding misnomer whose origin is unclear.
Description
The Azure Bloom is enormous compared to typical flora, a single lotus of vivid pink coloration. It appears only in the deep interior of the Weald, and its blooming cycle is irregular and not tied to any known seasonal pattern. The conditions that trigger a bloom are not well understood, though proximity to Ley Lines and areas of high ambient magical energy are common features of recorded bloom sites.
Significance
One Azure Bloom is cultivated year-round at a druidic shrine within the Sapphire Weald, maintained for use in an annual ritual. The druids who tend the shrine are the only known caretakers of a reliably available specimen.
The Azure Bloom is the first of three components required to unlock the full power of Darkesha’s Black Hat, the sentient artifact carried by Evangeline. The party’s initial mission in the Weald centered on locating an unclaimed Azure Bloom through a cooperative circle-casting protocol for Locate Object, involving Hazelnut, Beytel, Evangeline, Idris, Vera, and Nana Tulla.
The Shrine Path
The circle-casting sweep, complicated by divination interference following the appearance of a second planet in the sky, returned the shrine’s cultivated specimen as the dominant readable signal within the sweep’s range. No unclaimed bloom was detectable. The party’s path now leads to the druidic shrine to negotiate with its caretakers.
Hat’s Actual Requirement
Darkesha’s Black Hat does not require the entire Azure Bloom. The artifact’s actual need is a single seed and oil pressed from one petal, a fraction of the cultivated specimen that the shrine’s druids could provide without compromising the bloom or disrupting their ritual. This requirement has not been communicated to Evangeline or the party. The hat will reveal it only if asked directly. It is observing whether Evangeline and her companions will be tempted toward coercion or deception to obtain the whole flower before volunteering the more modest path.
