The Deliverance of Gecko Village
One of the most frequently retold episodes of Dancing Phoenix’s early reign is his intervention at Gecko Village, a hamlet that had been nominally under Ganju's protection but had been left to rot under the predations of the Cockatrice Demon Ji She Yao. When the demon had been restrained but not broken by the Black Team, Dancing Phoenix arrived in person with his Ruler of Admonition, a magical rod of compulsion, and forced Ji She Yao to undo every egg-curse he had laid on the village’s daughters. He then walked the bound demon back down to the headman’s house to personally restore the headman’s daughter, with the village watching. On leaving, he handed the demon’s confiscated Treasure Defeating Golden Coins to the Black Team as a gesture of thanks.
The incident is telling of how Dancing Phoenix governs. He could have claimed the village by proclamation; instead he claimed it by being the one who actually came. Gecko Village severed its tether with Ganju on the strength of that single day and aligned itself with Sowa, an early, small, but entirely characteristic step in his long project of exposing the absent authority of distant kings and making his own justice visible in its place.
