The Aetherium Veil is a colossal curtain of raw arcane energy that cascades down the slopes of the Luminous Peaks, visible for miles as a shimmering waterfall of shifting, multicolored light. It is believed to be a remnant of a lost civilization known as the Aetherians, who reportedly mastered the manipulation of raw magical energy before their civilization collapsed in a cataclysm of unknown origin. The Veil functions as a conduit to the untamed magic that permeates Rolara, and its persistent emission of arcane energy has transformed the surrounding landscape into the region known as the Arcane Wilds.

Appearance

The Veil manifests as a cascade of radiant energy flowing down the mountainside in the manner of a waterfall, pooling into a radiant lake of arcane force at the mountain’s base. The energy displays a constantly shifting spectrum of colors that appears to respond to external conditions: reports suggest the Veil’s hues grow dark and turbulent during periods of conflict or upheaval and bright and vibrant during times of relative peace, though whether this reflects actual sensitivity to world events or is simply a pattern imposed by observers is debated.

The Veil is visible from considerable distance, and its glow contributes to the broader luminous character of the Luminous Peaks, complementing the cobalt-blue radiance of the peaks’ Mytholith formations with a more varied and dynamic palette.

Effects

The Veil’s primary effect is the disruption of natural laws in the surrounding area. The raw magical energy it emits warps the landscape, creating a zone of wild magic where the rules of reality are routinely bent or broken. This zone is the Arcane Wilds, which extends for hundreds of miles in all directions from the Veil’s base.

Within the Arcane Wilds, the Veil’s influence produces a range of phenomena. Gravity can fluctuate or reverse without warning. Time is locally inconsistent, with pockets where it moves faster, slower, or loops. Spatial relationships are unstable, with distances stretching and contracting unpredictably. Flora and fauna within the zone have evolved to harness or tolerate ambient arcane energy, resulting in an ecosystem unlike any other in Rolara (see the Arcane Wilds article for full detail).

The Veil also affects magic itself. Spells cast within the Arcane Wilds can have their power amplified, diminished, or fundamentally altered. A fire spell might produce freezing blue flames; a healing spell might cause brief invisibility. These effects are unpredictable and contribute to the region’s danger.

Direct interaction with the Veil is extremely hazardous. Some individuals who have touched the Veil have reportedly gained extraordinary powers or insights. Others have been driven mad or disappeared entirely. No reliable pattern has been identified.

Localization and Reach

The Veil’s influence is strongest within the Arcane Wilds proper, but it extends beyond that region through two secondary mechanisms.

Veil Echoes are locations across Rolara where the Veil’s supernatural effects have imprinted onto the local environment, creating pockets of altered reality far from the Luminous Peaks. Each Echo is unique. Known examples include the Timeless Glade, a small grove where time stands still for anything within its boundaries, and Gravity Falls, a waterfall that flows upward under the Echo’s influence. Veil Echoes have been found in environments ranging from ancient forests to the hearts of cities.

Ley Lines are invisible channels of magical energy that radiate outward from the Aetherium Veil across the landscape. Where multiple Ley Lines converge, they create Nexus Points, locations of concentrated arcane power where magic is significantly stronger. Ley Lines and Nexus Points are of great interest to scholars and spellcasters, who study them in attempts to understand and harness the Veil’s power.

Origin

The Aetherium Veil is attributed to the Aetherians, a human civilization that predates reliable historical records. The Aetherians are believed to have been masters of raw magical manipulation, with cities built from magical architecture and a society deeply interwoven with the arcane arts. The term “Aetherian” is an exonym; their true name, along with almost all material evidence of their culture, has been lost. Some scholars speculate the erasure was deliberate, the result of the same cataclysm that created the Veil.

The nature of the cataclysm is unknown. Theories range from a magical experiment that exceeded the civilization’s control, to divine punishment, to an external catastrophic event. Whatever its cause, the cataclysm was powerful enough to alter the fabric of reality in the region, creating the Veil as a permanent scar and transforming the Aetherian heartland into the Arcane Wilds.
