The Luminous Peaks are a mountain range in Rolara distinguished by their crystalline summits, which emit a deep cobalt-blue glow under moonlight. The range is the sole natural source of Mytholith, the mineral precursor to Luminite, and has served as the ancestral home of the Storm Giants since the Age of Wonders. The ruined city of Thal’orim crowns the range’s highest peaks, and the range is surrounded on its lower slopes by the Aetherium Veil, a curtain of raw arcane energy whose influence has transformed the surrounding landscape into the region known as the Arcane Wilds.

The name refers to the range’s most visible feature: the nocturnal luminescence of the peaks themselves. The crystalline formations that cap the mountains are composed of Mytholith in its natural state, and when exposed to moonlight, they radiate a steady cobalt-blue glow visible for miles in every direction. The effect intensifies at dusk and fades at dawn, following a cycle that mirrors the behavior of refined Luminite and that scholars have attributed to the mineral’s responsiveness to ambient arcane energy.

Geography

The Luminous Peaks rise sharply from the surrounding terrain, their slopes steep and their ridgelines jagged. The range is oriented roughly north-south and consists of several major peaks separated by narrow saddles and deep valleys. The highest altitudes are perpetually snow-covered, and the crystalline formations that give the range its name are concentrated along the upper third of each peak, where Mytholith deposits are most exposed.

The lower slopes transition into foothills that border the Arcane Wilds, the zone of wild magic created by the Aetherium Veil. The Veil itself cascades down the mountainside in visible curtains of shifting, multicolored arcane energy, pooling at the range’s base in a radiant lake of raw magical force. This proximity means that the Luminous Peaks’ lower elevations are subject to mild reality distortions: fluctuating gravity, localized time irregularities, and spontaneous manifestations of arcane phenomena. These effects diminish with altitude, and the upper peaks are largely free of the Veil’s influence.

At the highest altitudes, the boundary between the Material Plane and the elemental planes reportedly thins. Scattered accounts from the Storm Giants diaspora and from sailors who have observed the range from a distance suggest that the uppermost spires of the Luminous Peaks may intermittently touch the Plane of Elemental Air, though no mortal expedition has confirmed this.

Geology

The defining geological feature of the Luminous Peaks is the prevalence of Mytholith, a dense cobalt-blue mineral with a smooth, granulated texture and a crystalline internal structure. Mytholith is the raw form of Luminite and is found exclusively in this range. The mineral occurs in deep veins throughout the peaks, with the greatest concentrations at high altitude, where erosion and tectonic exposure have brought deposits to the surface.

Mytholith shares a close relationship with aetheric crystal. Scholars who have analyzed the mineral’s composition have concluded that it is a precursor form of aetherite: mythek that has been ordered enough to be edible (the Stone Giants of the Shattered Peaks metabolized a closely related mineral) but not yet ordered enough to crystallize fully. This places Mytholith at an intermediate stage in the cosmological process described in the Ordering of Chaos framework.

The crystalline formations on the peaks’ summits are Mytholith in its most exposed and weathered state. Their luminescence is not a reflection of external light but an emission from within the mineral itself, generated by the slow release of stored arcane energy. The glow ebbs and flows with the rhythm of the night, intensifying under moonlight and dimming at dawn.

Mining Mytholith is exceptionally dangerous. The slopes are steep and unstable, and the crystalline formations are prone to landslides of sharp, gleaming shards. The nocturnal glow, while beautiful, can disorient climbers and miners, distorting depth perception on the precarious paths. Despite these risks, the mineral’s value continues to draw prospectors, particularly those seeking to supply the decorative Mytholith trade in Shamsi Adad.

Ecology

The Luminous Peaks support a specialized ecosystem adapted to high altitude, thin air, and persistent ambient magic.

The dominant species is the Silverswirl Glidewing, a gargantuan bioluminescent creature with a wingspan of roughly two hundred feet. Glidewings nest on the highest peaks, hunt mountain trolls in the lower elevations, and are fiercely territorial. Their bioluminescent tails and silver-violet scales echo the cobalt glow of the peaks themselves, and their presence is the most visible sign of life in the upper range. Vaasha, the last Storm Giant of Thal’orim, raises Glidewing chicks and has maintained a long stewardship of the species.

Mountain trolls inhabit the crags and hidden valleys of the mid-to-lower elevations. They have developed a resistance to many forms of magic, likely an adaptation to the proximity of the Aetherium Veil. They serve as the primary prey of the Glidewings, and the predator-prey relationship between the two species is the central dynamic of the range’s ecology.

The lower slopes, where the Aetherium Veil’s influence is strongest, support the flora and fauna of the Arcane Wilds, including mana-infused vegetation, bioluminescent fungi, and creatures that have evolved to harness ambient arcane energy.

History

The Luminous Peaks have been inhabited since at least the early Age of Wonders. The Storm Giants established Thal’orim on the range’s highest peaks, building the city additively from raw stone and infused obsidian rather than carving it from the mountain in the subtractive manner of their Stone Giant cousins. Thal’orim’s founding date is recorded as approximately 18,974 years before the present era, making it one of the oldest known settlements in Rolara.

During the Age of Wonders, the Storm Giants were widely considered the most magically advanced of the giant kindreds. Their civilization declined following the sealing of the Stars of Power, which diminished the ambient mythek the kindred depended on. The Storm Giants departed Thal’orim in a series of waves known as the Exodus, scattering across the world and possibly beyond it. Vaasha, now approximately 1,478 years old, is the sole Storm Giant who remained.

The range’s association with the Aetherians, a lost civilization of human mages, predates recorded history. The Aetherium Veil is believed to be a remnant of the Aetherian civilization’s collapse, though the nature of the cataclysm that created it remains unknown. The Veil’s persistent presence has shaped the range’s lower geography and ecology ever since.

In the present era, the druid Samael leads the Order of the Branch and Bramble from the Luminous Peaks, and the reignition of the Stars of Power three years ago has rekindled the ancient runes of Thal’orim, returning a measure of arcane vitality to the range.
