Holding II, Stone of Endurance.
Standing list. Last reconciled Year 393. Kept against the working schematics, which disagree with it on purpose.
Eleven parts of this fortress are missing from the working schematics or shown differently. This entry says which, and why.
Where the Exemplars ordered something struck from the plans, we record the striking even when we do not describe what was struck.
The list
| Section | Sealed | Why | On the plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower service run, aft of the cooling chambers | Year 68 | Rock movement. Judged unrecoverable. | Shown, marked |
| Residential Block Two, entire | Year 247 | Never opened. Door off the maintenance schedule. | Shown |
| Residential Block Three, entire | Year 247 | Never opened. Door off the maintenance schedule. | Shown |
| Upper store, north | Year 172 | Contamination. Cleared and reopened Year 175. | Shown |
| Second mess hall | Year 283 | Fewer of us. Not needed. Sealed against dust, not against entry. | Shown |
| Five cutting galleries | Year 91 to Year 169 | Work finished. | Shown |
| The Toren laboratory and its approach | Year 242 | Programme ended. See The Toren Program. | Struck |
Ten of the eleven are ordinary closures of the kind a long-occupied fortress accumulates as its people thin out.
The struck approach
The route to the Toren laboratory was taken off the working schematics by the termination order of Year 242. We keep the record that it was taken off. We do not keep the route, which that order holds to the sitting Exemplars and requires them to pass on in person.
So: the route is not in the Archive and not on the plans. It exists in the memory of Exemplars. No Terminal can produce it and no keeper can be asked for it.
What we can tell you is that the approach exists, that it opens off the lower level, and that setting this list against the working schematics will show you roughly where a corridor’s worth of stone is unaccounted for.
Mirren Stellara Farwatch’s note with the termination order requires the striking to be recorded here, because a section missing from both the plans and the Archive cannot be inspected, cannot be put on a schedule, and will not appear on any later count unless somebody wrote down that it was removed.
What this means for flying
Condition five in Before You Fly the Stone requires every sealed section to be looked at and released by an Exemplar.
Ten of them you clear by walking there and looking. The Toren laboratory you clear by having an Exemplar aboard who holds the route, and no other way. For that one section the release depends on who is present, not on what is inspected.
The Exemplars took that on knowingly. The termination order argues that the material behind the door is more dangerous carried through the fortress than left where it is, and that the Stone had not been flown in earnest for a generation and was not expected to be again.
The arcanum entered a note against that reasoning twice, in Year 283 and Year 347: a condition only one office can satisfy is a condition this fortress will one day fail on a day that office is not aboard. Neither note proposed a remedy. Both are carried forward and neither has been answered.
