The Stone of Endurance is an asteroid in Rolaraspace, adapted by the first Remnari refugees to reunite in the Astral Sea into a self-sustaining fortress. It served as the seat of the Remnari Enclave through the faction’s golden era, was gutted in the Astral Elf assault of 1531 PE, and has since been partially restored and reoccupied.
History
Founding
The asteroid’s origins are unrecorded. The first Remnari to settle it found it already adrift in Rolaraspace and adapted it into a fortress capable of sustaining several hundred residents. A power core resembling a Mythallar in output, though not a true one, supplied its systems, and a modified Spelljammer Helm, bio-locked to a designated captain, allowed the fortress itself to be navigated through Rolaraspace in search of lost kin.
The Remnari who settled the Stone of Endurance held that the asteroid was itself a remnant of their destroyed homeworld, carried into Rolaraspace ahead of them, and a substantial piece of that material was incorporated into the power core. Whether the belief is literally true has never been established; it is recorded here as the settlers understood it, and it shaped how they regarded the fortress. The conduit fuses governing the core were Emberlyr, carried from the homeworld in quantity. The stone is not peculiar to Remnar and occurs on many worlds, always in the same kind of region and rarely in bulk, but the Enclave never located a source it could draw on and spent two and a half centuries failing to, a failure its own archive records in detail.
The Tragedy of 1531 PE
A small strike force of Astral Elves from the Solanari Dominion attacked the Stone of Endurance without warning. Neither side survived the battle, and the asteroid’s defenses were compromised in the fighting. Its lower level was sealed behind an adamantine door damaged in the attack, unknown to the sole survivor Ami “Astralis” Oresinger, and a Cadaver Collector, assembled from the dead over the roughly one year that followed, wandered that section undiscovered while the fortress otherwise sat dark.
Restoration, 409 TC
The fortress was returned to use in 409 TC for the first time since the massacre. Repairing four Emberlyr conduit fuses with Aetherite Crystals brought the power core back online, at the cost of several wild magic surges, an unsurprising outcome given that a crystal supplies power without regulating it, and allowed standing water to be pumped out and a second mess hall located. The Cadaver Collector was destroyed in the fortress’s cooling chambers. Portable Terminals keyed to the fortress’s Terminal System were recovered and put back into service. The Spelljammer Helm has not yet been sat in by a Remnari.
The cooling chambers were cleaned and life support verified in the hours that followed, leaving the fortress habitable end to end. Block One is occupied again for the first time since the massacre. Block Two, never opened in the Enclave’s history, is infested with rust monsters that found their way in during the year the asteroid stood dark, and Block Three requires replacement components; both are closed until that work is done. The fortress’s medical wing needs materials unavailable in Rolaraspace, and its detention facility awaits only the hiring of staff.
