The Way of Kano is a monastic religious order and philosophical tradition founded on the teachings of Kano, born Viswamitra Talavalakar, who is venerated within the tradition as both a historical teacher and a divine patron. The order’s core curriculum is the Path of Eight Virtues, which traces Kano’s journey from his origins as a prince through his years of wandering to his eventual mastery and apotheosis. The Way is practiced most widely among the Esharan people but draws adherents across many cultures and regions, and maintains no formal political allegiance.
The Way of Kano does not maintain a centralized doctrinal authority or a formal heresy framework. Individual monasteries and communities operate with significant autonomy, connected by shared texts and the reputational weight of recognized teachers. This structure has allowed heterodox offshoots to emerge and persist at the margins of the tradition. The most theologically significant of these is the Krodhamarga, a wrathful tradition whose practitioners claim to preserve a face of Kano’s teaching that the orthodox faith does not acknowledge. The mainstream Way’s institutional response has been studied silence rather than formal condemnation.
