Goliaths: towering descendants of giants, valuing wisdom over strength, their bodies a canvas of stories, seamlessly integrating into human societies.

Goliaths are a towering humanoid people descended from giants, found chiefly in Rolara’s mountain ranges and, in smaller numbers, within the human societies of the lowlands. They are distinguished less by their size than by what their clans do with it: leadership is held by those who can guide a clan wisely rather than by those who could win a fight inside it, and strategic judgment carries more standing than physical strength. Goliath bodies are extensively tattooed, each marking recording an achievement or an episode in the bearer’s life. Those who settle among other peoples adopt local dress and custom without abandoning their own traditional practices and oral histories.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Goliaths are a towering presence, their stature a testament to their giant lineage. They stand head and shoulders above most humans, their bodies a canvas of muscle and sinew. Unlike their Realms counterparts, Goliaths in Rolara do not have grey, rocky skin. Instead, their skin tones range from very light to very dark, much like humans. Their faces are distinct, often marked by prominent brows, deep-set eyes, and strong jawlines.

Biological Traits

Goliaths are naturally athletic and robust, their bodies built for endurance and strength. This physical prowess is a product of their giant heritage, making them formidable opponents and valuable allies. Their skin is smooth and devoid of hair, a trait that extends to their facial features. Goliaths do not grow facial hair, and they traditionally keep their heads shaved, further emphasizing their unique appearance.

Giant descent is normally latent, expressed as build and endurance rather than as any visible marker of the kindred a given lineage descends from. In a minority of goliaths it surfaces during adolescence in traits at odds with the ordinary form described above: an unusual complexion, lines or markings that appear beneath the skin, facial hair, and in some cases an inherited magical capability that arrives without training and takes time to bring under control. The phenomenon is not common enough to have produced a consistent body of clan doctrine. Where a clan’s response has been recorded, the surfacing was read as ill-omened rather than as a mark of distinction.

Civilization and Culture

Clans and Standing

Goliaths organize into named clans, each holding territory within a range. The clan is the unit of belonging, the unit of territory, and in practice the only organizing structure a goliath encounters at home.

Membership is a matter of being claimed rather than only of birth. Clans take in foundlings and raise them alongside their own children through to the trials that mark the passage to adult standing, and a child absorbed in this way holds membership on the same terms as one born to the clan.

The corresponding sanction is the withdrawal of the claim. A clan that ceases to acknowledge a member neither kills nor formally exiles them, and the severed party continues to carry the clan name. What is lost is standing: in a range where clans are the only structure that confers it, a goliath no longer claimed by one holds none anywhere.

Range and Distribution

Goliath clans hold territory in the Shattered Peaks, the carved range south of the Onyx Mountains at the southern end of the Westwall. Goliath tribes in the mountains above Erfelion, in Ofica, trade with that settlement, placing at least two widely separated populations on record. Their descent is documented alongside the giant kindreds proper in the Giants index, which classes goliaths as giant-blooded rather than as giants.

Beauty Ideals

Traditional Clothing and Appearance

Goliath culture places a significant emphasis on tattoos. Their bodies, from head to toe, are often adorned with intricate tattoos, each marking carrying a story or a symbol of personal achievement. These tattoos are more than mere decoration; they are a testament to a Goliath’s life journey, their trials, and their victories. Their clothing is typically functional, designed for the nomadic lifestyle and the harsh mountainous environments they inhabit. Despite their imposing size and unique appearance, Goliaths integrate well with human societies, often adopting local clothing styles when they do.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Goliaths, with their giant lineage, are not just physically imposing but also possess a rich and unique culture. Their society, while technologically less advanced than humans, is far from primitive. They have a deep respect for wisdom, knowledge, and strategic planning, which often determines their leadership. The strongest Goliath is not necessarily the leader; instead, the one who can guide the tribe with wisdom and foresight holds this position.

Their culture places a significant emphasis on tattoos, which are not just for decoration but are a testament to a Goliath’s life journey, their trials, and their victories. Each marking carries a story or a symbol of personal achievement, making their bodies a living canvas of their life’s story.

Despite their size and unique appearance, Goliaths integrate well with human societies. They often adopt local clothing styles when they do, further showcasing their adaptability. However, they never forget their roots, maintaining their traditional practices and oral histories that trace back to their giant-kin.

In a world where strength and size could easily dominate, Goliaths choose to value wisdom and knowledge, making them a fascinating species to explore in the world of Rolara.

Nurngandröstr

The Practice

Nurngandröstr, rendered loosely as “Panicking Calmly on Purpose,” is a meditative discipline practiced among the goliath clans of the mountains. It combines mental conditioning with deliberate physiological manipulation, and its practitioners describe it as a survival technique rather than a contemplative one.

An initiate learns to control the rhythm of the breath and to root their attention in the present moment. From that settled state they deliberately call up images of danger: pitched battle, the weather of the high ranges, and whatever else the practitioner has cause to fear. The body responds as though the emergency were real, producing a surge of energy comparable to an adrenaline response, while the meditative focus holds the practitioner in a state of calm and prevents the reaction from becoming genuine panic.

Practitioners report that the discipline does more than prepare them for real emergencies: it sharpens the senses, quickens the reflexes, and raises tolerance for physical pain. It is treated as conditioning rather than contemplation, and its stated purpose is to produce someone capable of surviving the terrain.

The practice has a recognized counterpart in the martial tradition. The barbarian, the warrior who channels fury into strength, is a familiar figure in goliath tribal narratives and ceremonial games, and the clans understand that figure in Nurngandröstr’s terms: a fighter drawing on the same reservoir of energy in combat, under the same deliberate control, to heightened might and durability. Warriors of this kind are not described as mindless berserkers but as tacticians who apply their strength where it will exploit an opponent’s weakness, which is consistent with the value the clans place on judgment over force.
