Daren’s hands, once trained for battle, now crafted wonders, bridging the gap between the arcane and the mechanical.
Daren Tor is a Genasi artificer of Tathar ethnicity, one of the Starfinders, and a renowned inventor whose work bridges the arcane and the mechanical. He grew up in Tatharia Capitolina within the Laboratorium, where his mother served as a guard and his mentor Aberran introduced him to the Stars of Power. Alongside Samael and Balasar, he formed the adventuring trio that would reignite the ancient Mechanisms from the Age of Wonders.
Current Status
Daren Tor recently returned from Hell, where he had gone years ago with Balasar on a mysterious side quest. Neither was heard from again until Daren’s reappearance near the Adamantine Reach. He came back disoriented and volatile. In his confusion, he accidentally took school children hostage with his trademark explosives at the Reach. Samael intervened and resolved the situation, but a comedy of errors left Samael unwelcome at the Reach and Daren in jail.
While in custody, Daren rambled about a devil who could constantly change his face. This is confirmed to be Serevan, a face-changing devil of the Baator Conglomerate. However, Daren’s memories of his time in Hell are fragmented and unreliable; he was not able to provide actionable intelligence about Serevan or the circumstances of his encounter. Balasar's status following their shared trip to Hell is unknown.
In Banorud, 2 Lotus Secundus, 409 TC, Daren engineered his escape from the Reach’s custody. He persuaded the visiting Girlsquad to smuggle his confiscated bag of holding out of the evidence lockup: Beytel distracted the guards with food while Beytel’s spectral familiar, the bound soul of his brother Geist, passed the bag to Daren unseen. Daren reached into it and vanished, leaving without payment or explanation. Such a letter would be consistent with the standing legal arrangement Daren already maintains through a trusted magistrate (see The Greater Mole and the Family Mechanism). He has also spoken of halting the mining by letter until Harrick can personally see to environmental protections.
Daren made good on his promise the following night, delivering explosives to the party and supplying them a route into the aetherite workings beneath the Reach by way of an underground river tunnel. The sealed letter for the Viceroy did not change hands on this occasion and remains outstanding. He named Serevan again in passing but gave no indication of the devil’s whereabouts.
Personal History
The Laboratorium and Upbringing
Daren grew up within the Laboratorium, a Tatharian institution that serves as both a repository of state secrets and a public sanctuary of knowledge. His mother, Darice, a grizzled guard whose loyalty to Tatharia was unwavering, taught him swordsmanship and armor, lessons that doubled as a philosophy of life: the balance of strength and wisdom, secrecy and transparency. His younger twin sisters, Aralu & Aralili, popular socialites, introduced him to the social intricacies of Tatharian society.
The House of Tor, a lineage renowned for its wisdom, valor, and secrecy, shaped Daren’s understanding of duty and discretion. The Laboratorium became a crucible for his character, forging him into a man of courage, integrity, and innovation.
Mentorship Under Aberran
It was in the Laboratorium that Daren met Aberran, the Luminous Sage of Rolara, a pioneer in the fields of Gemcore Technology and the Aetherite Conduit System. Aberran recognized Daren’s potential early and took him as a student. Their relationship was one of mutual respect, marked by a shared passion for learning and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of what was known. Under Aberran’s guidance, Daren delved into the interplay between magic and technology, becoming a hands-on inventor and tinkerer who bridged the gap between the mystical and the practical.
Transformation into a Skilled Artificer
Daren’s journey from a youth in Tatharia Capitolina, where magic was a distant whisper, to a renowned artificer was marked by discovery, innovation, and mentorship. He led expeditions to unearth lost technologies from the Age of Wonders, forging new paths in the world of Rolara. His creativity produced inventions that transformed the way magic was harnessed and utilized.
Aleksandr and the Dragon Benefactor
The enigmatic Half Orc boy Aleksandr and an unnamed dragon benefactor added layers of intrigue to Daren’s story. Aleksandr’s motives blended ambition, revenge, and a twisted sense of destiny; his designs to unlock hidden magic concealed a sinister plot to lure the exiled dragons back for a perilous fate. His relationship with Daren was a complex interplay of trust and suspicion, alliance and rivalry.
The dragon benefactor, a hidden power guiding Aleksandr’s actions, influenced the course of events through subtle manipulation. The intersection of these three paths created a web of intrigue, conflict, and consequence that cast shadows over Daren’s adventures.
Connection with the Stars of Power
Daren’s connection with the Stars of Power was initially unconscious: while he remained unaware, spirits and deities perceived the bond, a link forged in the cosmic fabric of Rolara. His innate curiosity, courage, and integrity were all shaped by this cosmic relationship.
The Stars were keys to reawakening the ancient Mechanisms from the Age of Wonders. Daren’s mastery over them breathed life into relics long forgotten, reviving the echoes of a glorious past. The reignition reshaped the world of Rolara, heralding a new era of magic, technology, and possibility.
Tesris
Daren’s relationship with Tesris, his “son,” added a profound emotional dimension to his life. Tesris became a symbol of Daren’s legacy, a continuation of the House of Tor’s traditions.
The Greater Mole and the Family Mechanism
At some point in his pre-Hell years, Daren won a tavern wager against Azernathy Brüd at cards. The stake was the Greater Mole, one of Harborside's principal working wharves. The game was played in public and without incident; both men were composed throughout, and the encounter itself was not noteworthy outside of the wharf’s subsequent provenance.
Before his disappearance into Hell, Daren put in place a legal mechanism, administered by a trusted magistrate, by which assets held in his name would devolve to specified members of the House of Tor without requiring his direct ongoing input. The arrangement was structured as a standing instruction the magistrate would execute according to terms Daren had drafted, allowing him to enrich his family during his absence without leaving the assets under his own ungoverned name. The Greater Mole passed under this mechanism to his cousin Enheduana Tor, who currently holds the wharf in her own name.
